When creating any visual piece, stopping and thinking about the composition of how the objects sit in the frame is very important.
The rule of thirds is the simplest and most well known composition technique to follow if you wish to bring harmony and interest to a picture. This pint glass of tulips (well I am British!) is set to the side to showcase the red tulips. Cropping part of the bouquet enhances the end effect.
However rules are also made to be broken! So if you wish to add more drama to a piece, play with the balance: in a photo have the horizon at 1/5 of the height, or an 1/8 and see how the focus shifts to the sky and the feelings this then evokes in the viewer.
